I'm at a complete loss to explain my continued DNS problems. I can see this site but pinging crabapples.net results in an INCORRECT IP, even after making the change yesterday.

Maybe the change hasn't snaked its way through the system yet?

A different experience? - [9:53 AM]

I got an e-mail from a friend, Cass McNutt, pointing me to an article written in February 2000. It's a wonderful article, in some ways it's like my experience, in other ways very different. I'll talk more about that later, it's a long story, and it's one I'd like to share some day. In the meantime enjoy James Fallows view of Microsoft.

One interesting quote in the article, which I'll revisit later as well.

"I was intrigued, therefore, to find that Microsoft relies as heavily on face-to-face contact as any organization I've ever seen. The culture is meeting-centric. To make a difference one must be at the headquarters, must come to the office, must sit through meetings."

This is that whole "Redmond is the center of the universe" thing again. Funny thing, people actually believe it is.

DNS woes continue, but... - [9:07 AM]

It looks like the DNS mapping for CrabApples.NET is still incorrect. I contacted my ISP and their wizard in residence figured out the problem. Turns out Network Solutions is causing the problem. They're still pushing out the OLD IP address. I just confirmed the problem and hope to fix it today. So with any luck this domain will be back up and running by tomorrow morning. Cross your fingers for me.

Well it's not right over there, look under Krusty the Clown. I just added a Blogsnob "add" to the links on the right. The idea is a good one. You can sign up for Blogsnob, it's free, paste a little javascript into your links area, and Blogsnob will do the rest. What you get is a random link to someone that's signed up for the service. It's a neat way to discover new weblogs, right?

The one thing that'll get it jerked out of my links however is if someone runs across a really nasty site because of it. I want this site to be PG and I don't want to have to keep my kids from reading it. So if you come across something objectionable please let me know and I'll pull it, no offense to Blogsnob because it is a good idea.

DNS weirdness - [11:43 AM]

For those of you that cannot see this site, which I'd imagine is MOST people, there's been some kind of mixup with the sub-domain mapping. I'd mentioned a while back that my ISP was making a transition and there may be some hiccups. Well, there ya go. You can see this page by visiting http://www.crabapples.net/rob, but http://rob.crabapples.net is busted for the time being.

They're on the case and I'm sure it'll be fixed in NO time. Thanks guys!

Order of the Phoenix audio book - [11:40 AM]

Seattle PI [via HPANA]: "The Random House Listening Library sold a record-breaking 575,000 copies of 'Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix' on audiocassette and CD in three days." - We all read the book, now we're listening to the tapes. In fact we're at the very end of them. Jim Dale does a wonderful job as usual. The one thing you will notice however is the British pronunciation of names vs. the Americanized versions from the previous books.

Worth every minute IMHO.

We're going to listen to Goblet of Fire after this one.

OmniGraffle v3 - [12:45 PM]

So does anyone have a copy of OmniGraffle v3 for Mac OSX? The product page says "Import and export Microsoft Visio® XML files seamlessly with OmniGraffle Professional." I'd like to see a drawing built from scratch and exported. I DO NOT doubt they can read and write our XML, .VDX, files. But my guess is they could be quite large because of lack of inheritance to a master shape, I could be wrong.

Congratulations guys, this product is absolutely beautiful. I'd love to see it in action.

Weekend in the other valley - [11:33 AM]

We had a great weekend road trip to the Silicon Valley, San Carlos in particular. I finally got to meet my newbie niece and nephew, Sydney and Tyler. It was fun to play with an infant again, to try and figure out what make them cry or laugh, and just goo and gaw at them in general. It's been so many years since we had babies in our household you forget how much fun they are. Of course mom and dad were always available so I could always call for help when necessary. We spent the better part of Saturday afternoon catching up and having a nice home cooked meal. Sunday we grabbed brunch together at a joint right in front of Oracle's HQ. I can't remember the name of the place but you should try their South of the Border omelet, good eats. Their coffee cake is outstanding so we got one to bring home. Honestly I wouldn't mind a road trip like that once a month. Thanks Michael & D for sharing the kids with us, we had a great time.

The only 'bummer' was not getting a chance to go by Jing Jing, next time we're going to get there for sure!
