"Somebody call the Waaaambulance!" Ok quick, what movie! Send your guess here. Radio Blogs Does anyone know how many Radio blogs there are in the universe? Is there a page where they're ALL listed? If there's not Dave & Co. should create one! (Hint, hint) I keep stumbling across interesting blogs, but usually because Dave has found them himself and linked to them on his site. Don't you think it would be cool to have a top level site that listed all the Radio Community Servers and once you clicked on that link it would list EVERY blog in the community? I think that would be cool! A Blog Central! Makes me wish I had more time on my hands to do fun stuff! Wednesday, March 20, 2002 [11:04 AM] Howdy Net Neighbor Today is a stay at home day. My poor wife had to have an out patient procedure this morning so I need to be around to help out. My little 56k connection is a bit limiting and now that we've implemented a new build environment my laptop is NOW useless as a development box because I don't have enough drive space to build everything, bummer. Gonna have to get one of those external USB drives, a BIG ONE! Good is bad? CNET: "Stocks tumbled lower midday Wednesday on jitters that an interest increase may be on its way after the Federal Reserve said on Tuesday that the economy is growing at a significant pace." - Heaven forbid the economy improves. The stock market is about as fickle a thing there ever was. Stocks fall based on the fear that interest rates MAY increase. If everyone would just stop trying to become a millionaire over night this kinda stuff wouldn't happen. Let it ride people! Then again I'm not a stock broker. Chris Pirillo raves about Peets Coffee on his site and Dave Winer will on occasion start his day with Morning Coffee Notes. So in honor of coffee I'm going to start the day with a pointer to Seattle's premier coffee joint. No it's not the one everyone knows with the nautical name, it's Monorail Espresso. Seattle's first espresso cart! The coffee is truly the best in Seattle. When Visio was in downtown proper, not the waterfront like we are now, our address was 520 Pike Street. Monorail was just a trip down the elevator, hang a right out the door on Pike Street, and walk about 20 yards to their little nook in the side of the building. There was always a line outside that place! Here's an article in Sunset Magazine about Chuck Beek, the man behind the cart. For those of you interested in visiting Seattle here's an Aussie point of view that just so happens to mention Monorail. NOTE: The article is kind of old(well old in internet time) so the address is not correct. Monorail's coffee is roasted by the Mukilteo Coffee Company. You can order espresso direct from them but you're not going to be able to get Monorail's blend unless you buy it right from Monorail. Monorail Espresso is located in the side of Banana Republic at 510 Pike Street. Blades Blade servers are back in the news. Intel is getting ready to slip some new PIII chips into the market built just for blade servers. Very nice. I really hope someone can create inexpensive blades. I see these servers as throw-away systems, and they should be. It should be easy for a little ISP to maintain a rack of thirty inexpensively. One fails just buy a new one and plug it in. But it doesn't look like that'll happen for quite some time. The new Intel chips are going to sell for $289.00 each in 1,000 unit quantities. Bummer. The prices NEED to come down, the blade including process should run around $100.00. That should make it extremely easy for a small shop to compete. Monday, March 18, 2002 [1:27 PM] This is a joke, right? The cost of Radio Community Server, are you kidding me? That has got to be a joke, you're pullin' our chains right Dave??? If that's true your servers are going to burn to the ground when you open the gates to download. [10:59 AM] Around the web Today is going to be one of those screwy days. We've just gone through a major upgrade to some of our systems in the group and everyone is configuring boxes to work with the changes. It's one of those days.... productive but not, all at the same time. Tomorrow will be productive. Richard has been writing a series of articles based around .NET. In 'VB.NET: Why "Option Strict" is our friend' Richard continues his analysis of language features complete with IL to support his findings. I'm getting quite addicted and learning a thing or two in the process. Nice! Today's music selection Default - The Fallout. To me they sound like a fusion of Pearl Jam and Fuel, that's a good thing. [9:14 AM] Good Mornin' Y'All HBS Working Knowledge: There will be evolution, rather than revolution and it will take many years to work through. [via News.COM] - That's the truth of the internet. It's an evolution, a natural progression. That's why companies like Amazon may NOT have a future, although they stand a good chance of surviving. I still believe if Wal-Mart wanted to crush them they could; that doesn't mean they should, it just means they could. Your business will change because of the internet. It's just like mail or radio or tv. The internet has made it easier for some companies to do business while making it more difficult on companies set in their ways. I'm rambling as usual, time to move on. New internet baby UserLand is due, today! It looks like the boys are going to try and kick Radio Community Server out the door today! I hope it's as popular as Radio is. The server version is really what I'm interested in. I like the desktop tool just fine but I've never managed to make the switch like I'd hoped. I LOVE the power and customization capabilities afforded by Radio but in the same breath I like being able to blog from any web browser, anywhere. There lies the rub. Every time I think about it I want to run out and buy a copy of the server software(Manila) because it DOES EVERYTHING I'd ever want in a blogging tool, EVERYTHING! It would give me the power to easily manage my site the way I like it, archiving is absolutely wonderful, it does RSS, it's completely scriptable, makes use of open standards(XML-RPC and SOAP), and it works like I think. Now I just need to convince my wife that $900.00 is a good investment. Here's to many happy and successful years UserLand!
